Soare cu dinţi or Sun with Teeth

$1,600.00
sold out

40”x 40”

Encaustic on wood panel, framed

There are times when I just can’t find the right words to describe the image I’ve made. Here is a mountain landscape that blinds the viewer with a glinting winter sun yet chills to the bone upon that first step out the door. She tricks you into leaving your hat and scarf behind only to slap you across the face stinging your nose and your eyes. It’s happened to you before, right?

Why is there no work or phrase for this in English? Perhaps I need to study my own language a bit more or consult with my New Englander pals. Or perhaps, just perhaps, there are simply better phrases to assign to this work among the multitude of languages on our planet.

English just falls short here. So, I turn to Romanian and the phrase “Soare cu dinţi.” It precisely describes how one feels when they step out into a sunny winter day to only be hit by an unexpected blast of arctic cold. Soare cu dinţi or roughly translated: sun with teeth.
